Observations of the Spanish Festoon in 2025
The Spanish festoon Zerynthia rumina is a nationally protected Mediterranean butterfly. The first sighting of 2025 was collected on February 16th in the Pyrénées-Orientales, but the peak of activity occurs in late April/early May. The very last adults are usually seen in the second week of July.
The butterfly's caterpillar develops on Aristolochia pistolochia, a species strictly confined to the Mediterranean area.
The Spanish Festoon should not be confused with the Southern Festoon Zerynthia polyxena, which flies in the same regions and on the same dates.
