Influx of Striped Hawk-moth in 2025
The Striped Hawk-moth Hyles livornica is a large migratory moth. Originally from Africa, it is a regular sight in France, and more widely in Europe. This spring, however, the influx of the species appears to be quite exceptional in terms of its scale. Between the beginning of April and 14 May 2025, the species has already been reported 225 times in 35 départements!
This moth flies during the day and at dusk, but it is also attracted by lights at night. It can be distinguished from other hawk-moths by its long, white wing bar and the two white V-shaped markings on its shoulders.
Females can lay their eggs on a wide range of plant species, including vines, rosebay, euphorbia and willowherbs.
