Distribution of the Natterjack Toad in 2024
The Natterjack Toad Epidalea calamita is an amphibian that appreciates pioneer environments, poor in vegetation and with loose soil.
Its breeding season begins in February and lasts until June. It can be observed in wetlands, often temporary, generally devoid of fish: back-dune depressions, seeps, old quarries, but also sometimes ruts, vineyards or flooded plots.
Its vocalizations are characteristic. They remind the noise of a fingernail passed quickly over a comb.
