Distribution of the Common Clubtail in 2024
The Common Clubtail Gomphus vulgatissimus is a dragonfly characteristic of watercourses with moderate currents and sandy bottoms. It can also be found in lakes and gravel pits, but this behaviour remains marginal.
This dragonfly, which is widespread in France, generally emerges in a very synchronous and often massive way. The entire population of a site undergoes metamorphosis in just a few days. In the early hours of the morning, it is sometimes possible to observe thousands of individuals drying their wings after moulting during the night.
