Breeding Bullfinch in 2023
The Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula is a robust and discreet song bird, although the male sports a highly contrasting plumage.
Widely distributed in winter, it remains rare or absent in Corsica, along the Mediterranean coast, in the Garonne plain and in the Centre-Ouest. In fact, it avoids climatic zones favourable to holm oak. The Bullfinch prefers regions where beech trees thrive.
This does not mean that it is dependent on this species. It can be found in various types of woodland, including mixed and coniferous, as well as in poplar plantations, floodplain forests, hedgerows and parks.
Where it is present, the bullfinch frequents feeders and can therefore be seen in gardens.
