Southern Shrike reproduction in 2023

The Southern Shrike Lanius meridionalis is a species of Mediterranean affinity, replacing the Grey Shrike in warmer and drier regions. It can be seen along the Mediterranean coast, but is absent from Corsica.

In 2013, the national population numbered between 500 and 1,500 pairs, but the species is in steep decline and the French population is now probably much smaller.

The disappearance of extensive livestock farming and the increasing scarcity of insects appear to be the major factors in the decline of this species.
