Distribution of the viperine snake in 2024
The Viperine Snake Natrix maura is a small, harmless snake. It prefers to live near wetlands. It is regularly observed in water, where it fishes for small fry, captures insects and even frogs.
For at least the last two decades, the Viperine snake has been declining sharply in France, to the point where it is now considered Nearly Threatened!
