Distribution of the Wasp Spider in 2023 and 2024
The Wasp Spider Argiope bruennichi is a large and beautiful spider with a southern affinity, but which is clearly expanding northwards.
It can be found in both dry and wet grassland, and is easily spotted by its web woven between stems and divided vertically by a vertical zigzag, the stabilimentum. The argiope generally stands in the middle of this silken ornamentation. When disturbed, it vigorously shakes its web.
Sexual dimorphism is particularly marked in this species, as the male is only a quarter the size of the female. He is regularly eaten after mating.
Note: in Mediterranean areas, Argiope lobata can be found, with its silvery colouring and very clearly lobed abdomen, like an oak leaf.
